Escape the inner city madness by hopping on a five-minute ferry from Circular Quay to Cockatoo Island, a heritage listed sanctuary smack bang in the middle of Sydney Harbour. Cockatoo Island’s only bar, The Island Bar is hard to miss: constructed from shipping containers and miles of astro turf, it is the rose amongst the thorns of the original shipbuilding yard. Get sorted in the deck chairs or roll out a blanket (they’re nice and give these out) on the grass and soak up the postcard Sydney Harbour views. Old school tunes, bar staff with sex hair in striped sailor shirts and jugs of cocktails are the perfect weekend wind down. With an Italian aperitif theme, don’t be fooled by the pizza oven in a shipping container – the wood fried pizzas are the business while you witness the flourishing activity on the island. The Cockatoo Peach Julep (Maker’s Mark, peach liqueur, fresh lemon juice & mint) had us nicely medicated for the incredible Sydney Harbour sunset. All the cocktails come in jugs - hold your horses though as the last ferry on a Sunday is 7.44pm and BarChick didn’t want to get stuck on a semi-deserted island, unless of course it’s at The Island Bar with an endless supply of their famous Nutella pizza.
