BARCHICK SAYS

Temperance isn’t our strong point to be fair, but we are willing to get civilised for a tipple in this classy joint. It’s members and friends only, but they’re not going to break your legs if they find you’ve politely blagged your way in. Just say you’re thinking of getting membership.

It’s located above Sidecar, which although an excellent cocktail bar and restaurant in itself, is open to the public, and half the fun is getting past the unmarked black door.

The bar is small - 48 capacity at the max - with a handful of bar stools or leather booths. Jazz is playing in the background, maybe someone is playing the grand piano and it should be smoky. Think Broadwalk Empire without the silk knickers or tommy guns. It’s understated and timeless, with none of the rowdy crowds of College Street, so you can focus on practising the art of drinking well.

They serve the highest quality booze, the garnishes are painstakingly made and their drinks come with a little history and imagination. They’re trying to bring cocktail making back to the pre-Prohibition days before our tastebuds were soiled with Sunny D and McDonalds. One of the house rules stipulates that if you even ‘attempt’ to order a cosmopolitan you will be asked, politely, to leave. Kudos.

Basically, give it a go. Around 400 people pay a bunch of money for the privilege.
