Café Sperl was Hitler's favourite coffee house, but don't let this put you off. It's really, really old in here: ceilings are high and ornate, velvet couches are faded from wear, the marble slab table-tops are sort of chipped, walls are covered with ancient framed pictures (none of Hitler, we checked) and there's even an old telephone booth that's now a messy stationary closet.

Just as you'd imagine, couples sit at window tables reading newspapers-on-sticks and drinking coffee, groups of studenty types have lively conversations about all things philosophical and American tourists play games of pool. They're probably here due to the café's cameo appearance in Before Sunrise (the Ethan Hawke movie).

We drank Campari & sodas and watched the crowd. Café Sperl is kinda like the ugly sister of the traditional Viennese coffee houses, but the atmosphere can't be beat.
