The Jekyll and Hyde

The Jekyll and Hyde

BARCHICK SAYS

Discreet but perfectly formed, this tale of two bars is an oasis of Victoriana glamour just off Birmingham’s city centre. It’s the Dr Jekyll gin parlour, tucked above the Alice in Wonderland themed courtyard that makes this place a mecca for cocktail connoisseurs. Book in Thursday- Saturday nights and the gin oracles (aka the hot chicks), will guide you on a dazzling journey of gin infusions from a choice of over eighty bottles. There’s something for everyone, whether a gin virgin (try a Smirnoff Ice of the 1800s aka a Tom Collins) or old hand looking for new poisons (we spied a bottle of Dutch Zuidam). With a tasty food fusion menu to match - mackerel and gin compote anyone? The only obstacle is the popularity, so book early.

Fear not if gin’s not your thing - the buzzing Dickensian pub downstairs serves a great selection of cask ales and reasonably priced classic cocktails with a ‘Hyde’ twist. Liver-pickling potions and candy stripe sweets come in teacups and top hats and, though you may feel like you’re drinking dessert, there’s a tempting selection of traditional pub food and snacks to salivate over.

If you’re still standing, then save your dancing shoes for Friday and Saturday jazz nights or, unwind during the week with a vintage film or quiz.
