SAINTLY SPIRITS

Kamm & Sons Kamm & Sons Ginseng Spirit is the hero of the healthy drinking world. This British aperitif contains 4 types of ginseng along with 40 other botanicals including manuka honey and echinacea (see ya later flu). It’s got a lower ABV than most spirits so you won’t get too p*ssed, and ginseng is actually good for metabolizing alcohol; if you’re gonna drink during that detox, this is the way to do it. Get your health kick with a Sunshine Mary: Kamm & Sons, yellow tomato juice, a squeeze of fresh lemon, 6 dashes of green Tabasco sauce, a pinch of salt, pepper, and celery salt and a touch of horseradish. KAMM.SON Tequila Hit hard by the January blues?  You need a shot of tequila. It’s the only spirit that’s proven to release happy endorphins (you know, the same as chocolate and sex). Also, being made from agave and all things organic it’s also been linked with dissolving fats and lowering blood pressure. Keep it natural baby and make sure it’s an 100% agave tequila like Aqua Riva. If you’re not keen on shooters and don’t fancy sipping it neat, go for a Tommy’s Margarita: tequila, lime juice and agave syrup - it comes from the same plant as tequila and contains only natural sugars which leaves you less dehydrated after drinking. Or if you’re heading out hit up BarChick’s favourite Margarita joints in London and get loco. TEQUILA

CALORIE COUNTING

No-one likes a calorie obsessor (unless they’re the creator of this site: getdrunknotfat.com). That said it’s a little too easy to sink half your daily allowance in a few cocktails: just because it’s liquid doesn’t mean it don’t count people. If you can’t fit in your jeans but don’t wanna ditch the booze altogether, here are a few that won’t have you piling on the pounds faster than you can say Piña Colada. Vodka, soda & fresh lime aka. Skinny B*tch They don't call this one skinny for nothin’. The queen of low-cal drinking, vodka and soda with a squeeze of fresh lime (step away from the cheap cordial) comes in at less than 90 calories a drink. SKINNYBITCH Martini At just over 100 calories get straight to the point with a Martini; gin or vodka, vermouth and lemon peel. Add an olive if you’re feeling dirty. MARTINI G&T Keep it simple with a G&T and if you’re looking to save 50 calories by switching to slimline, make it a good’n like Fever Tree – after all tonic makes up 70% of your drink, don’t f*ck it up. GINTONI Champers Celebrate detoxing in style with a glass of Champagne. It’s not only sexy and small but it has fewer calories than a glass of wine or beer. Need more? Medical research (no, not done by BarChick) has also said that Champagne is linked to lower rates in heart disease. CHAMPAGNE

KEEPIN’ IT SIMPLE

An obvious point would be to keep it simple. If you can’t stave off the whisky, pour it on the rocks. Need your gin fix? Forget the sours and reach for the tonic. Also the boys at Cocoface are making the world a better place, so why not spice up a fresh coconut with a bit of rum, that’s one healthy drink right there. cocoface Boozing or not keep hydrated. Flush out toxins and keep sexy with 2-3 litres of water a day, you know the drill. Matching every drink with a glass of water does the world a favour in the morning, even if it does mean you spend all night queuing for the toilet." CENTRAL

SEA CONTAINERS AT THE MONDRAIN

We’re talking Clay Oven Roasted Leg of Lamb with mint yoghurt and coriander seeds and a f*ckton of crispy roast potatoes, steaming veg, meaty gravy, the works. Plus you’ll be right on the Southbank… insane riverside view, tick. Post lunch stroll when you feel like you’re gonna explode, tick. Thought roasts were just for Sunday? BLACKLOCK

Chops from Hawksmoor

Our favourite place for a chops fix, the guys at Blacklock are now taking on Sunday roasts. Built above their in-house charcoal grill is a meat suspension bridge that slow-roasts whole cuts of beef rib, middlewhite pork and Cornish lamb legs served alongside massive yorkshires, duck fat roast potatoes and marrow gravy all for just £20! Sip on Bloody Marys, Breakfast Martinis and cold-pressed juices with mini gin bottles too. Sundays never tasted so good.

24 Great Windmill St, London W1D 7LG

Dean Street Townhouse Simple straightforward feeding Soho on a Sunday is a whole different vibe to any other day; it drops the weekday hardcore hustle and late night debauchery and, just like us, spends the whole of Sunday recovering. They keep it pretty simple at the Townhouse with straightforward beef or chicken which is pretty perfect for hungover days when you need to keep the energy levels to a minimum. Two courses are only £24 too so it’s winning all ‘round. 69 – 71 Dean Street, London, W1D 3SE Tom's Kitchen Tradition with all the posh trappings You're not gonna get your mum's bland but miraculously spot on slapdash meat and two veg special here, but you're gonna get just that turbocharged. If you want to stick to tradition, no problem: settle into the roast of the day served with fresh veg, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pud. But if you wanna go wild, try the seven hour confit lamb served with mashed potato and balsamic onions. Got a massive sweet tooth at the table? Seal the deal with a pear and blackberry crumble with clotted cream or a baked Alaska with panettone and vanilla ice cream. Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 1LA Hawksmoor Air Street The King of all roasts These guys are the biggest meat heads in town which means that the Hawksmoor roast is probably the best the goddamn city’s got to offer. They cook their beef on charcoal and serve it with duck fat potatoes, bone marrow and all the rest of that roast-y goodness but if you’re feeling less carnivorous then this Hawksmoor specialises in seafood so take a look at those lobsters. By all means, whatever part of town you’re in, hit up the nearest Hawksmoor for total roast perfection. 5a Air Street, London, W1J 0AD ROAST.Hawksmoor (2) Corrigan’s Mayfair Great post-stroll grub Hit this place after a brisk walk in Hyde Park; it’s got a mean roast that isn’t all about the meat. With beef and lamb on the menu they’ve got some great variety and for those feeling fishy you can order up hake, cod or brill instead. They have the perfect Bloody Mary and a great wine list too. Also, their exceptional sommelier advocates free pouring, our hero! 28 Upper Grosvenor Street, London, W1K 7EH  Riding House Cafe Banging brunch meets Sunday lunch These guys do a serious brunch/lunch all rolled into one, It’s the perfect spot to kick back in if you’ve decided to brave the hectic hoards on Oxford Street. They’ve got roast chicken for two and a rib of beef as well as small plates, salads and soups which we’d just eat as extra sides - poutine chips? Hello! If you’re feeling the effects of last night’s booze, we say just get back on it and order up one of their four Negroni options. 43-51 Great Titchfield Street, London, W1W 7PQ ROAST.Riding.House.Cafe Coq D'argent City staple Perched on the roof of No. 1 Poultry is this City brasserie doing Sunday lunch proper. THE ALBION

A whole goddamn pig

This beautiful Georgian building draped with wisteria and weeping willow houses a roast of champions. Literally. It’s won awards. Their lamb rump, pork belly, fore rib and whole Sasso chicken are all kindsa good but we’re desperate for a chance to round up 15 people order their whole roast suckling goddamn pig. Yeah, baby.

PIG AND BUTCHER

In-house butchery and bigass sharers

With a name like that there’s gotta be some good meat on the menu, right? Not only do they butcher all their own meat on site but they’re big into brining, braising, smoking and curing. All their veg is fresh from Kent and their fish swims in from the south coast, if you want quality then you’ll get it here. Share a Special Reserve chicken for two or go big with a 35-day aged roasted Hereford sirloin. Your veggie mates won’t be disappointed either, their roasted Potimarron squash and poached egg could tempt the most hungry of carnivores.

RED LION AND SUN

Takeaway roast dinners

This pub is surrounded by so much greenery that you’ll probably rock up after a lengthy walk with mud on your shoes and someone else’s dog in tow. Luckily, pups are welcome. Their roast is mega with loads to choose from braised lamb shank to a veggie nut roast, you can even get it all to take away if the hangover’s *that* bad. Booking is essential. You have been warned.

25 North Road, Highgate Village, London N6 4BE

THE PRINCESS OF WALES

Calling the people of Primrose Hill

Passing this pub on a Sunday is like passing an actual people magnet - you’ll be pulled inside before you know it. Not only do they have a jazz band tapping their toes for the afternoon, but you can hang downstairs in the bar, fill your face on the second floor and then, weather permitting natch, freshen up in their little garden (complete with original Banksy, y’know). Their food is all locally sourced and tastes amazing so take a wander around Primrose Hill then finish off here before the Monday fear hits.

THE BULL AND LAST

Taxidermy and trimmings

If you’re on the hunt for British pub grub at its best then this is your spot. Work up a sweat on Parliament Hill and make your way here where a taxidermy moose and bull hang high above the punters down below. Lunch here will last you the day, especially if you squeeze in some starters first - you should. Their roast sirloin and roast pork belly come with more than your average trimmings, and the veggie option of sheep’s cheese gnocchi is damn good too. It’s time to go big.

SOUTH

THE CROOKED WELL

South’s best roast

Probably the most famous roast south of the river, you’ve gotta be really dedicated to this cause ‘cos you need to book in mega advance or be prepared to queue. But with brick walls, low lighting and proper gastro pub vibes as well as chunky cuts of beef, all the trimmings and epic meaty homemade gravy, it’s totally worth the wait. Make sure you check out their ‘secret mix’ Bloody Marys too, it just wouldn’t be Sunday without one.

This self-titled 'grand old dame of a pub' in Herne Hill has just had a faux rustic refurb and it's all kicking off with epic Sunday roasts. If you're a recently converted urbanite with roots still deep in the country, this'll sort you right out. They've also got their very own microbrewery on site alongside biodynamic wines. Got a hound? All are welcome. Not made a booking? THE TRINITY

Perfect rumps

Somewhere along the line this place has been voted ‘Best Sunday Lunch’ so it’s definitely worth getting to. Not just any old roast, their organic rump of beef is totally killer, as is the leg of lamb and chicken with trimmings to die for. The veggie Wellington and butternut risotto has got it going on for those herbivore mates too. This isn’t your chill and fill your face kinda place though, the glasses are polished and napkins are pressed. This treat is not one to drag the hangover crew to.

HOUSE OF TIPPLER

Manhattans with your mutton?

With a helping hand from Tim Maddams (the dude from River Cottage, team Tippler rustle up a damn good roast in that neighbourhood cocktail joint of theirs. THE CANTON ARMS

A sunday sesh in Stockwell

A 10 minute walk from Stockwell tube, this place does a mean Sunday session. You can’t make a booking but the wait is softened by their Bloody Marys. It’s full of south London families and groups of mates so it’s all local, friendly, lazy Sunday vibes. Serving up either chicken, lamb, beef or pork to a pretty damn high standard and some great plates to share, the only difference between the roast here and cooking up a banging one at home is you have to pay up at the end - but when the food is this good it’s worth every penny.

WEST

The Truscott Arms It’s all gravy, baby In its own words, “this is a pub worth travelling for”, and we can’t help but to agree with it. This five-storey Victorian pub happily lends itself to any occasion, from settling in at the bar with a pint (or even a cocktail), to enjoying a formal dinner with friends in the restaurant upstairs. Whatever your flex, it’ll do you proud but it’s their Sunday roast that we book in for. From lamb, to pork, to beef rump with seasonal roasted veg, potatoes, puddings and crazy good gravy, it truly is a roast of champions. We dream about that gravy. 55 Shirland Road, London, W9 2JD ROAST.the.truscott.arms Princess Victoria Save room for pudding What used to be a Victorian gin palace is now Uxbridge Road’s best spot to hit if you’re roast hungry on a Sunday. They have over 400 wines to choose from, a cigar and wine shop, a herb garden courtyard and some seriously good food. They’ve got beef, pork belly, lamb and roasted poussin all served with dripping roast potatoes and hella good veg. If you’ve still got room after that, hit the cheeseboard, sticky toffee pudding or gelato. There’s always room for gelato. 217 Uxbridge Rd, London, W12 9DH The Scarsdale Tavern Post-shop feeding Location-wise this spot is perfect if you’re jamming in some Sunday shopping/Whole Foods perving as it’s only two minutes from High St Ken. Down one of the quieter streets, this pub’s the one literally covered in greenery. Inside it’s all rearing horses framed by heavy gold frames, chunky tables and a crowd that lunches here on the reg. They don’t serve the world’s best roast but what does appear from the kitchen will fill you to the brim and satisfy your Sunday hunger cravings. 23a Edwardes Square, London, W8 6HE ROAST.the.scarsdale.arms The Idle Hour One for the Barnes locals Hidden down a small alley in the far away hideout that is Barnes, it’s the locals’ best kept secret. Of the many clocks that line the walls, there is not one that tells the right time so you can lose a couple of hours here. The roast is a big event for these guys (as are the burgers, but that’s another story); they make sure their meat is from one of the best butchers in town. The choice is either a whole roast chicken or a roasted leg of lamb served with goose fat potatoes, veg and gravy. For a minimum of two people, rally your pals and get carving. 62 Railway Side, Barnes, London, SW13 0PQ The Harwood Arms If your name’s not down, you’re not coming in It’s no secret that the Harwood Arms does a banging roast, so make sure you book ahead because rocking up on a Sunday, mates and hangovers in tow, is not gonna go down. The Sunday menu changes with the chef and the season but whatever’s on the menu will come with a side of the whole shebang whether you’re into meat, fish or just banging veg. We say screw cutting things out in 2016, just do things differently. January can be a pretty fun month, especially if you do it the BarChick way. DON’T: JOIN THE GYM… INSTEAD: GO RAVING The beauty of a rave is you can dance for 6 hours straight with it feeling like 2 minutes. Drink lots of water, lose weight by sweating and have a damn good time. It’s practically a month’s worth of gym sessions in one night, SORTED. rave INSTEAD: HAVE MORE SEX Sex is like doing a 20 minute skipping session but a lot more fun, obviously. It’s exercise, so use and abuse this fact. Don’t get sweaty with strangers in a gymnasium – and don’t even get us started on Bikram yoga. Instead, pick someone you like, use that dimmer switch and whack on some Marvin Gaye… you know what to do. sex DON’T: GIVE UP DRINKING… INSTEAD: DRINK BETTER COCKTAILS Drinking doesn’t HAVE to be bad for you, maybe you’re just ordering the wrong thing. It’s all about drinking the right way  - for example, tequila lets off happy endorphins (Jen An loves the stuff). Plus loads of bars do skinny cocktails. The Anthologist has a whole load all year round, such as the Skinny Superfood Collins that’s only 105 calories with Gin Mare, fresh basil, raspberries, blackberries, agave and fresh lemon juice, served long with soda. tequila INSTEAD: DRINK MORE WATER It’s something we all know but somehow ignore, yet having a water in between drinks really does fend off the hangover and helps you remain a respectable person. Get into the habit of having a glass between drinks and downing a pint before bed and you’ll be good to go in the morning. Hangover who?! water DON’T: GIVE UP DRINKING TO SAVE MONEY… INSTEAD: LEARN HOW TO MAKE COCKTAILS AT HOME Drinking cocktails at swish bars can start to add up, so if you’re watching the bank balance and not the liver, head to one of the many cocktail classes in London and learn to make a signature cocktail. Stock up your booze cupboard, throw some parties and make the drinks yourself! It saves you money plus it makes you look bad ass. Not sure which ones to try? We’ve got that sorted for you! make cocktails DON’T: CUT OUT BAD FOODS… INSTEAD: TRY NEW WEIRD FOODS We could all cut out cheese, pizza and chocolate but where is the fun in that? Instead of cutting food out, bring new foods IN (bonus if it’s something healthy, obvs!). The fruit and veg aisle always has some weird looking stuff, dragon fruit is a good place to start. Live a little. vegetables DON’T: LEARN A NEW SKILL… INSTEAD: LEARN A NEW PARTY TRICK The music is playing, the drinks are flowing and the party tricks are coming out. Do you want to say “I took up Italian lessons this year” or do you want to impress with a damn good party trick? Knotting a cherry stick with your tongue while moonwalking will make you far more friends than a belated driving licence… you can’t drink and drive anyway. moonwalk FORGET LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT… INSTEAD: LEARN A SONG You don’t want to do a load of lessons only to be able to whack out grade 2 guitar chords. Get a teacher, don’t dilly dally and just learn that ONE song that will have people in awe. Far more useful. That way when you’re sitting by a fire under the stars and a guitar is being passed around you can whack out an acoustic version of Slade’s guitar solo in Michael Jackson’s Beat It and get laid. guitar" ["post_title"]=> string(39) "New Year's Resolutions the BarChick Way" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(0) "" ["post_status"]=> string(7) "publish" ["comment_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["ping_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["post_password"]=> string(0) "" ["post_name"]=> string(38) "new-years-resolutions-the-barchick-way" ["to_ping"]=> string(0) "" ["pinged"]=> string(0) "" ["post_modified"]=> string(19) "2017-01-05 19:02:21" ["post_modified_gmt"]=> string(19) "2017-01-05 19:02:21" ["post_content_filtered"]=> string(0) "" ["post_parent"]=> int(0) ["guid"]=> string(28) "http://barchick.com/?p=19865" ["menu_order"]=> int(0) ["post_type"]=> string(4) "post" ["post_mime_type"]=> string(0) "" ["comment_count"]=> string(1) "0" ["filter"]=> string(3) "raw" } [4]=> object(WP_Post)#413 (24) { ["ID"]=> int(58094) ["post_author"]=> string(1) "4" ["post_date"]=> string(19) "2016-12-20 10:11:00" ["post_date_gmt"]=> string(19) "2016-12-20 10:11:00" ["post_content"]=> string(21144) "New Year’s Eve: the night when staying in is more frowned upon than not walking on the left hand side of the escalator, is just around the corner. Barchick Says

Date Updated: 24/04/2012

This place is a box to tick by all. It’s a badly lit dive bar with luminous walls, UV lights and busy graffiti all over the walls (link somewhere to the facebook photos maybe?). Take ya Sharpie and get involved – see if you can spot BarChick’s tag. It starts to get busy after midnight, even on a school night which is unusual for Mumbai.

If you wanna play pool have a chat with one of the inappropriately smartly dressed stewards in high collared jackets, these guys rule the pool tables roost and monitor who goes when. We played a couple of rounds until we were politely told to hand our pool cues over again and happily headed to the bar for a drink. There’s not much on offer, but that’s not the point: have a beer or a glass of red (the Indian wine Sura is perfectly drinkable) or make like the locals and have a Bacardi Breezer… retro! Dance and sing along with everyone to rock anthems old and new. Get there by midnight, it’s packed on weekends and stays open 1.30am.

Tip: Go outside if you fancy a fag, not in the weird enclosed and pretty unpleasant smoking room!
