Slink downstairs into this silk-smooth speakeasy located beneath restaurant Mystique. Having begun life as Herrie Bar and Kitchen (one of the city’s first decent cocktail bars), this dimly lit hideout is now owned and championed by Amsterdam’s hottest bartenders. Booze assured that whatever you order here will be bang-on the money.

Upon entry the door girl will take your coat, so make sure you’re wearing something half nice underneath. Check yourself in the mirrored ceiling; you’re looking fly against the black, patterned walls and leather sofas, aren’t you? We thought so. BarChick likes to make a spectacle of herself by perching at the long bar and watching the hot bartenders do their thing. We totally surprised ourselves by loving the gas fire that runs around the top of the room, lighting it with cozy little flames, hello 1990s flashback.

Four bartenders hustle behind a beautifully set-up bar featuring interesting infusions, homemade syrups and premium spirits. These guys know their way around a cocktail shaker and there are literally no limits to what’s on offer; we went for a Mystique signature Japanese Basil Cup (Bombay East Gin, sake, basil, lemon, elderflower and soda) served over crushed ice in a julep tin, and continued through the rest of the menu until bedtime, wonderful.
