This is a cosmopolitan drinker's rum bar - no wonder it's one of the World's 50 Best. Step into Baba Au Rum and boom! You're off around the globe on a tropical trip. The cocktails at this Athens institution have soaked up the culture that owner Thanos Prunarus brought back from his round-the-world travels. Now that's our kinda souvenir. He's also brought together loadsa different design elements, from Japanese prints, to retro American-style bar stools, to a killer collection of Tiki mugs, for magical mid-century vibes with international flavour. Dreamy!

Take a peek at the Dada-inspired, continually evolving Avant Garde cocktail menu, and you'll see that rum is the primary focus here (they've got around 400 labels!). The bar's namesake cocktail should be your first destination: it's an umami-fuelled Daiquiri with rum, vanilla, sweet sherry, oak, lime and basil. Feelin' hot? Look out for the Spicy Baba, another masterpiece made with Puerto Rican rum, berries, lime and ginger. It's been the most popular drink on the menu since way back in 2010, so you know it's good. Open 'til late, with DJs on deck all night long, it's hands down one of the best party spots in the city.

Pro tip: the morning after the night before, head to Thanos' café right across the street, In Love Again, for an expertly made coffee and a cocktail-inspired pastry. Rinse and repeat!
