BARCHICK SAYS

This was one of the first bars on Istedgade, a street once better known for the hookers and homeless. These days it’s full of vintage shops, cafés and bars, this being one of the originals.

A former 19th century pharmacy building, they’ve kept a lot of the original features. The walls are deep red with a wall dedicated to the paintings of a famous Danish fisherman. The front room has a scattering of tables for diners, while the backroom is set up more for drinkers and layabouts with comfy sofas, arcade machines and cinema seats. They’ve got a handful of pavement tables that are an insanely popular spot to bag in the summer. The free refills on filter coffee keep the wifi crowd happy all day.

With very affordable food serving everything from curry to croquet-monsieurs, it’s packed most of the time, with diners turning into drinkers as the hours pass by. The high windows make it bright and cheerful in the daytime, and flickering candlelight make it brooding by night.

The drinks are incredibly cheap for Copenhagen, so those on the budget should hole up here. Every Saturday night, Ingebords Cocktail Salon takes over, offering drinks for 60KR, half the price that you’ll pay in the city. Yes, the menu of Cosmopolitans and Mojitos won’t blow your mind, but they also won’t blow your budget.
