When only the best will do, those with fast cars and thick wallets flock to join the Sheiks, stars and supermodels at Zuma. Part of Rainer Becker’s empire, it’s got siblings in London, Hong Kong, Miami and more, all with the same modern izakaya-style Japanese dining, and all hot as hell. Date night, business lunch, or wearing in your Louboutins – this is where to do it.
Naturally the interiors are pretty slick, with lots of modernist brass and high ceilings, screaming exclusivity. Though don’t fear – you can normally get a same-day reservation thanks to space for 300 diners, alongside super service from the charming waiters who deliver delights like soft shell crab, black cod and beef tartare (so good, it made BarChick’s date cry) to your table. There’s even a dedicated Martini station for peak times to keep the drinks flowing, smooth.
While most people focus on the insane restaurant, BarChick raves about the bar here - the cocktails are so damn good you’ll want to shout it from the tallest building in the world (which luckily is just around the corner). At the helm is Jimmy Barrat (#2 World Class 2012), shaking, stirring and mixing knock out drinks every time. BarChick was silenced by the Japanese Old Fashioned, could live off the Zumacolada and was even blown away by his G&T (think fabulous fish bowl). Keep your wits about you and you just might stumble across a secret cocktail menu… but ssshhhh some things are too good to share.
Zuma states the bartender ‘has a sixth sense: the sense of cocktail-making’ – we’ll drink to that.
