Kamchatka Club

BARCHICK SAYS

This place is billed as a bar-cum-museum to the Russian rock legend Victor Tsoi and his legendary band Kino. Never heard of him? Nope, us neither, but who cares when there’s this total time warp of a bar in his honour.

So who’s this dude? His lyrics were so controversial they were banned from playing live, he appeared in Kung-Fu movies and like all the best, suffered an untimely death by car crash on a fishing trip. Total rock god material. BarChick approves.

Kamchatka is one of the few bars on Petrogradsky Island, ten minutes from the football stadium and slightly off the main tourist drag. The entrance is on a backstreet through what appears to be a submarine door. Descend into this shrine to his heyday with old photos, band posters and merchandise all over the place. It used to be a coal boiler room in the 80s, and is where Viktor once worked as a stoker adding to his hardcore credentials.

Nice folkie boys and girls gather on the communal wooden benches and the vibe is most definitely grungy. There will usually be Kino tracks playing or live sets and everyone sings along. In this basement, the legend is definitely living on.
