'Mama knows best' used to be a statement we'd roll our eyes at, followed by a lot of door-slamming & Alanis Morissette at top volume. But when the Mama in question is championing killer cocktails, mega tasty food & a stylish-yet-comfy space to while away several hours then... well, we think we'll take her advice.
Mama Shelter London is tucked next to hipster-paradise Hackney & does have a bohemian, artsy element to the interiors. Tassled lampshades, mismatched cushions & kitsch china ornaments are all par for the course but it's not 'edgy' in the sense it's too-cool-for-school. Instead, it's a genuinely welcoming spot with awesome staff. In winter there are flickering fireplaces & snug armchairs to nestle into, in summer the main room is flooded with light & you can go chill in the foliage-draped garden terrace.
This Garden Bar is where we recommend you start your night, working your way through the eclectic cocktail list that has something for every taste. The 'Sundays on Columba Rd' with butterfly infused ELLC Gin (made just down the road fyi) was blooming lovely. Then make your way inside for dinner - the highlights are the Middle Eastern-inspired flatbreads which are absolutely smashing. The portions are ideal for lining that stomach & the flavour combos rock. Spiced falafel with coconut tzatziki & tomato hummus? Yes Mama!
