This is a proper neighbourhood joint that seems to be buzzing all day every day from morning until night. Yes, you may have to wait for a table, but never that long, and it's always worth it.

Located on the edge of McCarren Park, it has a laidback local vibe. The coffee-to-go window has a constant stream of Greenpoint freelancers coming for a caffeine hit or lunchtime sandwich. There is a light nautical theme, with stripped wood, gold portholes and a lovely marble-topped curved bar at the centre. Come have a lazy brunch of chef Ken Addington's famous ricotta pancakes on one of the pavement tables or enjoy one of their excellent cocktails (we love the Five Leaves Gimlet: St. Geroge Dry Rye Gin, lime, simple, cardamom biters).

The dream of late actor and Joker legend Heath Ledger, he didn’t live to see it realized, but with funding from his estate, his two best friends opened it in the wake of his death. That might have got it press coverage, but it’s the excellent healthy cooking and atmosphere that has made it a success. Mr Ledger they've done you proud.
