The Shameful Tiki Room

BARCHICK SAYS

The easiest way to find the Shameful Tiki Room is to look for the line up outside; there’s no standing room inside, and people are willing to wait – for good reason too. Filled with beachcomber kitsch, from the tiki lights and Polynesian idols, to the palm canopies and bar staff in Hawaiian print, you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled into a mid-Century tiki den.

Pull up a bamboo stool at the bar or hide out in the Castaway Room with a table for two. The Hang-Ten Hangmen leave their band kit here, and come around frequently to play, but this is paradise, and they aren’t on a schedule.

The cocktails are ‘rum rhapsodies’ ranging in strength from mild to yowza (take that seriously). With over 50 rums behind the bar, join the tasting club, and once you’ve tried them all get your name on the wall. Known for their recreation of Don the Beachcomber’s Zombie and Trader Vic’s Mai Tai, the Hurricane also comes recommended – about halfway through you’ll be praying to the cocktail gods. Or order a Mystery Bowl with your friends, and be prepared for a flaming bowl, a handful of straws, a blast of fog and a chorus of tribal chanting.
