We’re bringing a little bit of Je Ne Sais Quoi to the proceedings for BarChick Advent Day 10, and giving away a hamper of goodies from the sexy crew at HINE cognac.
First up, we’re bringing ya a lesson in acronyms. Pay attention in the back.
When it comes to this sexy French brandy named for after the region of Cognac where the liquid is produced, there are three categories it can be grouped into: VS, VSOP and XO.
VS stands for “Very Special”. Only a cognac that has spent a minimum of two years aging can lay claim to those letters after its name (think of it as like a Diploma in being Cognac), while those that have spent four years aging are awarded VSOP status (the Masters degree), which stands for “Very Superior Old Pale”. Then the XO or “Extra Old” cognacs are the PhD of Cognac, with six years spent reaching maturity.
This specific cognac, H by Hine, is a VSOP from the sun-bathed orchards on the banks of the Charente in Jarnac. It’s a blend of over a dozen Grande and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie with the youngest in the blend being aged for at least 4 years. Rich and oily in texture, with fruity notes of sweet sultanas and apples, this cognac has been created with cocktails in mind, and that’s just how we like it.
Add Hine, lemon juice, sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake well. Strain into a flute and top up with Champagne. Garnish with an orange peel.
