Oz Bar

BARCHICK SAYS

It was the locals who told BarChick about Oz Bar, and it’s a good job we didn’t judge this book by its cover. On the road up from the busily boozy Grassmarket, Oz Bar’s shabby exterior makes it look like the kinda place you wanna wear your Doc Martins to. The owner is brilliantly charismatic and the bar staff are awesome so there’s no wonder this place is full of both devoted old timers and travellers, anyone and everyone will feel welcome.

Peppered with Australian stereotypes including a model of a boxing kangaroo and Aussie bar snacks like twisties and shapes in case you antipodeans are feeling homesick, mate. The no nonsense décor consists of wooden tables, chairs and a surfboard covered room which makes this place feel like a shack, and it’s undeniably charming. There’s sport on the box 24/7 (muted) plus two pool tables that are free before 7pm on weekdays. It gets pretty busy but if you’re up for a bit of jovial camaraderie then get involved, it’s an open blackboard winner stays on system and BarChick just loves a bit of friendly competition.

Bearing in mind it’s in the heart of the Old Town the drinks prices aren’t bad at all (don’t ask for anything but Australian beer or Australian wine.) This is the perfect bar to hit-up with a group of mates. Flying solo? Chat-up some trashed backpackers and listen to tales of the great outdoors.
