The Exmouth Arms is a local pub up for some fun times and good grub, but it wouldn’t rock our world if it didn’t harbour a dirty secret upstairs (you're looking for the backdoor) . Okay, it’s not really dirty – it’s actually pretty damn classy – but we still love the whole ‘only for those in-the-know’ vibe.

The hostess greets you at the door, which totally sets the tone – a gentlemen’s club for the discerning drinker.

The cocktail menu changes every three months except for the Forgotten Range. These are spirits that have aged over time available from the old apothecary cabinet at the back of the room, which you can sample for £10. Order some oysters too, if you’re peckish or getting horny later.

There are only 30 seats – no standing - and you need a reservation at weekends. It’s quiet in the after work hours, but best for a nightcap as that’s when it’s most atmospheric. Deer skulls and old photography line the papered walls; leather chairs and brass tabletops; and a set of antlers above the brick fireplace. This looks like the sort of place you should sit with an old book, a pipe and a drink so strong it would make a weaker man cry. Do it.
