Maybe you know Phileas Fogg from Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days - or maybe you know him as the fictional founder of London bars Mr Fogg's Apothecary, Mr Fogg's Residence and more (the real-life creations of the mavericks at Inception Group). Now the Fogg empire has debuted in Soho with a bar inspired by Victorian-era pawn shops and the neighbourhood's eclectic history.
Mr Fogg's Pawnbrokers, set on a prime piece of real estate on Dean Street, builds on the world of Verne's hero by introducing bargoers to Phileas' rogue half-brother Frank - purveyor of antiques, Victorian erotica and some damn fine cocktails. The bar will feature three areas: the Pawnbrokers Counter, complete with a bar and banquettes to cosy up in; the Strong Room, modelled after pawnbrokers' vaults and dripping with 19th-century jewels, gold and antiques; and the Textiles Store, featuring another bar that's decked out with loadsa vintage carpets and rugs.
The drinks also play into the pawnbroker theme in Mr Fogg's classic extra AF style, from Fool's Gold, with peanut butter fat-washed Dewar's Scotch whisky, Martini Riserva Speciale Ambrato vermouth, Boulard Grand Solage Pays d'Auge calvados, chestnut syrup and vanilla bitter, all served in a jewellery box; to Priceless Heirloom, a mix of Bombay Sapphire gin, Essentiae lemon verbena liqueur, raspberry shrub, lime juice and Franklin & Sons Rose Lemonade, presented in a Ming-style vase. Time to channel your inner pawnstar, baby!
