As the name suggests, this bar isn’t immediately easy to spot. Tucked behind a ramen restaurant in trendy Greenwood, you can only just glimpse it through a tiny circle of glass in the door. Don’t go thinking this a moody, shadowy Speakeasy though. Far from it. The Hidden Pearl is channelling tropical Japan, and we’re in love.

There’s kind of yacht-like vibes going on with the curved benches, sailor-blue wooden panels and slanted backbar that reminds us of a sail. A skylight floods the room with light and gives it a bright and breezy feel. Useful since it’s a pretty small space with only 18 seats. There’s plenty of smart moves to make it feel bigger though. White walls, arched mirrors, and pearlescent, fish-scale touches glimmering on the floor and benches. Can we live here, please?

Cocktails take serious inspo from Japan - Okinawa, in fact, the tropical tip in the South. You’ll find sake, shochu and yuzushu (a kind of Japanese Limoncello) sprinkled throughout the menu. BarChick perched at one of the gold-rimmed stools and got started on The Windrush Generation - white miso infused bourbon, Jamaican rum, Amaro Nonino, banana and Castilian bitters. Totally exotic, totally our bag. Make sure you don’t leave hungry - Sakana are Japanese small plates intended to be eaten with booze. The crispy rice with spicy tuna rock, FYI. As speakeasies go, this one is definitely a catch.
