Ronnie's Local 069

‘Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere.’ Damn straight Ronnie. That’s the sign above the bar in here, and we’re pretty much sold already. This is a Kensington Market stalwart, and stallholders, bartenders and local hipsters prop up the bar day and night. It’s a good option if you want a daytime drink in a town where many bars don’t open until 5pm.

There’s a lot of bourbon and whisky on the menu, three imported lagers and six domestic. There are knick-knacks all over the place: tea towels of Saint Bernard dogs, newspaper clippings from wartime Toronto Star, toy robots and teapots. The bartenders look like they’re in bands and have good facial hair, and it’s normally their iPods playing under-the-radar local groups or classics like Velvet Underground and Bowie.

The back room has awesome safari wallpaper with tables for those wanting a more chilled chatting night. The big front patio is great for summer nights and feels like a house party when it gets going. If you get peckish, you can get a cheese sandwich delivered from The Grilled Cheese place across the road.

BarChick was here on a rainy afternoon when a dude walks in and buys us all a round of whisky. Sure. On another occasion, when she didn’t have enough cash for her beer, a gentleman in the corner stood up and paid for it. That’s the general vibe: be nice or leave. We’re down with that.
