We didn’t know if the plaid shirts and Country Western kitsch was ironic or not, but they sure get into the spirit of things here. It feels like an old world saloon, with an antique till, lights hanging from the bar and battered old signs on the walls. The kinda place you’d find on a road trip down South and get stuck in a drinking marathon.
On the north of Ossington Avenue, it’s subterranean and dark – so not ideal on a sunny day, but great for those long cold nights. They’ve got a great selection of beer and ale on tap, including their own Dakota Brew, and a couple cocktails although its not really that kinda crowd.
The owner is in the house band, alt country The Beauties, and has established it as a well-respected gig venue. There’s a different band on every night of the week and the crowd is always a nice mix depending on the music, though the emphasis is country rock and folk.
Come for Sunday’s Bluegrass Brunch when they have live bands on the little stage and all-you-can-eat Southern fried breakfast of eggs, hash browns, blueberry pancakes, bacon and lots of maple syrup. Wash it down with a Bloody Caesar and soon you’ll be doing Two Step on the dance floor.
